“In the beginning there was high adventure for the Wingfields, and they were equal to it. The continents of the Americas were baptized in their blood.”

The line quoted above is only one of many attempts to tell the story that ultimately became The Glass Menagerie. Williams wrote “I think I worked on MENAGERIE longer than any other play.” As Williams remembers or reminds himself of how and when that work took place, he shows us that the play was never meant to be a gentle memory play but rather perhaps “the most unsparingly dark one” he would ever write.
